Student Stories: Devon Hamill

Currently studying Full-stack Web Development

Q: Can you tell us about your background and why you decided to learn coding?

My background is in teaching, specifically I was developing online math courses as opposed to teaching in a classroom setting. I enjoyed the blend of tech and teaching in that role, particularly the programming aspects which involved making algorithmic test questions for students. Over the summer, I decided I wanted to shift more into tech because I felt more passionate about it than classroom teaching.

Q: What have you done to prepare yourself for a career in tech?

Before starting at Altcademy, I took the CS50x course to see if I had an aptitude and interest in coding, which I really did. Then, I reached out to my employer about my interest in learning to code and how it could benefit our company's online services. Remarkably, they were supportive and even offered to fund my programming education with the understanding that I would be able to contribute to our company's tech needs once I had the skills.

Q: How are you finding your learning experience with Altcademy?

I've been enjoying the Altcademy course a lot. It's split into manageable chunks that I can tackle part-time while working full time, which works out perfectly for me. Altcademy's structured approach is a welcome contrast from CS50's intensive and open-ended assignments. One aspect I have been learning and appreciating is the ability to ask questions and get timely support, which is crucial for my progress.

Q: What are your goals once you complete the program?

My immediate goal is to work on our company's website to apply and solidify my skills. I'd like to eventually become a full-stack developer. My timeline is about six months from when I started in the beginning of October, considering the balance I’m striking with my full-time job. Eventually, I'm open to seeking new opportunities and possibly moving to a different city like Ottawa, where tech opportunities seem quite promising.

Q: Any final thoughts?

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the support from my existing employer and Altcademy's cost-effective approach to learning coding; it's a significant factor in my decision to pursue this path. I’m also appreciating the format of the course, which complements a working professional’s schedule. I'm excited about the journey ahead and the opportunity to apply new skills in a practical environment.
