Student Stories: Morgan Williams

Currently studying Full-stack Web Development

Q: Tell us about yourself!

I have lived in the UK my entire life, just outside of London. I have wanted to move to London for a while now and I am 26 years old. I used to work for Microsoft in a non-technical role as an account manager for a year and a half, but it was too bureaucratic for my liking. I then started my own business and eventually sold it. I am now learning how to code, which I believe will be beneficial when I start working on different ideas. I am now looking for a job again and I plan to pursue entrepreneur stuff later on. I have always wanted the coding skill set and the product development side, such as understanding what is possible and how it is possible. I would like to eventually build out my own ideas in the future.

Q: Is this your first time learning to code?

In the past, I tried it with Codecademy, but I struggled because there was no accountability. I put coding on the backburner since it wasn't a priority, but now I'm putting in 4 to 6 hours a day on Altcademy.com and doing business on the side in the evening.

Q: How do you like Altcademy?

I really like Altcademy. It is exactly what I am looking for because it is self-paced, and the content is related to web development, which I am familiar with. The instructor has guided me and I knew what I needed to get out of the course, such as understanding the fundamentals. The actual structure of the course is nice and it is text-based with assignments at different checkpoints and big final assignments. It is slightly overwhelming, but never too much.

Q: What’s your ultimate goal?

I have five months until the end of my current runway, and I need to figure out what job I would like to do. I'm considering full-stack, front-end, or design engineering. I'm thinking of looking for smaller-scale startups to utilize my coding skills to implement my ideas on the side or in the background.
