Q: Tell us about yourself!

I am a family man who's in love with my wife Sunshine and a hands-on dad blessed with three beautiful children ages 6, 5, and 3 respectively. Currently living in the Philippines and happens to be a permanent Hong Kong resident too.

I graduated as an Electronics Engineer, now specializing in SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) System and currently working in First Gen Corporation (the only pure renewable energy source in the Philippines) as a SCADA Engineer Operations and Maintenance.

Q: Why did you decide to learn to code?

I always wanted to learn to code but I don't know where and how to start. I dream of creating my own software and app that is related to renewable energy that will be beneficial to many.

As a SCADA System integrator for many years, I have used different software and experienced the limitations of each software that I use. I'm just wondering, what if I develop my own software or app so that I can do whatever I want to do that can surpass the many limitations of the everyday average software. And this is why I decided to learn to code as a starting point of my dream.

There is a favorite quote of my wife from a good saint that says "dream, and your dreams will fall short!", and I believe in this too.

Q: How’s your experience going through Altcademy?

First up, I am grateful to Altcademy's team for creating this online bootcamp to help those people eager to learn with limited time and resources.

I actually made attempts to self-study online but it is very difficult without any guidance or curriculum to follow. Here at Altcademy, you can chat instantly for help and even schedule a one-on-one tutorial if you really need it.

In-person coding bootcamp is impossible for me since I cannot afford to quit my job, just to attend the classroom type bootcamp. Altcademy is 100% online, so this is what really suits me given my very busy schedule and limited time.

It is also affordable, compared to other coding bootcamps. I enrolled in the Full-Stack Web Development course. Right now, I am still in the HTML and CSS module course and so far I have not encountered any problems.

My mentor is very prompt in answering all my questions and gives light on the topics that I need coaching more.

Q: What’s your end goal in learning to code?

Aside from wanting to develop my own software and app related to renewable energy, I also want to have the freedom to work on my own and be able to create my own business as an entrepreneur.

By knowing to code and becoming an expert on it, I can have a choice of my own tech startup business or a combination of all (1) eight-to-five office job (2) project-based remote job and (3) tech startup business.

This way, I can be more flexible when I eventually become an expert coder. I can work whenever and wherever I want, travel or spend more time with my family, and do more of the important things I want to accomplish in life. This is what I am aiming for.
